Around the World with Chip Goodyear, ’80

Yale alum Charles “Chip” Goodyear has lived and worked around the world as a distinguished energy industry executive. Chip recently retired as CEO of BHP Billiton, the world’s largest diversified resources company. During his nine years with BHP Billiton, the organization grew at an astounding rate, with it market capitalization climbing from US$12 billion to US$220 billion. As CEO, he was early in the identification of China and other developing countries as drivers for future resource demand. During his tenure, BHP Billiton’s volumes grew by 55% as significant project investment and acquisition activity positioned the company to benefit from the growing demand for commodities. The company has also been recognized for its leadership in the areas of health, safety and the environment.

Chip holds a Bachelor of Science (Geology & Geophysics) from Yale and an MBA from Wharton. He has served on the International Council on Mining and Metals and the National Petroleum Council.
