With Jonathan Brent, former editorial director of Yale University Press
Jonathan Brent, the first publisher granted access to Stalin's personal archive, brings us a provocative and insightful portrait of modern Russia. In his recent book Inside the Stalin Archives, Brent draws on fifteen years of unprecedented access to high-level Soviet Archives to examine Stalin’s enduring legacy. He shows us a Russia in which, in 1992, used toothbrushes were still sold on the sidewalks, while now shops are filled with luxury goods and streets jammed with Mercedes.
Jonathan Brent is currently the visiting Alger Hiss Professor of History and Literature at Bard College and the executive director of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. As editorial director of Yale University Press, he founded the distinguished Annals of Communism series. Professor Brent holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and is currently writing a biography of the Soviet Jewish writer Isaac Babel.
Come join fellow alumni as Jonathan Brent presents a vivid portrait of Russia in the twenty-first century. RSVP to Stuart at shudson7@comcast.net.
