nside the Stalin Archives: Discovering the New Russia

With Jonathan Brent, former editorial director of Yale University Press

Jonathan Brent, the first publisher granted access to Stalin's personal archive, brings us a provocative and insightful portrait of modern Russia. In his recent book Inside the Stalin Archives, Brent draws on fifteen years of unprecedented access to high-level Soviet Archives to examine Stalin’s enduring legacy. He shows us a Russia in which, in 1992, used toothbrushes were still sold on the sidewalks, while now shops are filled with luxury goods and streets jammed with Mercedes.

Jonathan Brent is currently the visiting Alger Hiss Professor of History and Literature at Bard College and the executive director of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. As editorial director of Yale University Press, he founded the distinguished Annals of Communism series. Professor Brent holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and is currently writing a biography of the Soviet Jewish writer Isaac Babel.

Come join fellow alumni as Jonathan Brent presents a vivid portrait of Russia in the twenty-first century. RSVP to Stuart at shudson7@comcast.net.

She was the Vincent J. Scully Professor of History of Art from 1998 until her appointment to the Sterling Professorship ten years later. Prior to assuming the deanship, Miller served as master of Saybrook College for nearly a decade. Her husband, Edward Kamens, is the Sumitomo Professor of Japanese Studies and served as acting master of Saybrook from December 2008 through the end of the 2008-2009 academic year.

President's Annual Letter -- Risher Randall, Jr.

August 28, 2009

Dear Local Alum:

It’s that time of year again! Yes, it’s time to renew your Yale Club of Houston membership. If you neglected to join last year, or have never been a member, we encourage you to give membership a chance. It is never too late!

Though we do not have a building or a swimming pool or a golf course, we do have fun! This year we are beginning the season with our traditional wine tasting to take place on Friday, September 25th. Nina and David Karohl and Anne and Austen Furse have agreed to host the event. On deck for the evening of October 22 is a presentation by Bob Stokes, class of 1990, on the condition of Galveston Bay. Bob is President of the Galveston Bay Foundation. In November, we will have our traditional get together to watch the Game.

These events will be followed by many more. In addition, last year’s Yale Day of Service was such a success – with some 45 volunteers manning the Beacon, an organization which cares for the homeless, and constructing a home for Habitat for Humanity – that we are considering another project this year. The Bulldogs on the Bayou program completed its second year as we hosted six Yale students for summer employment.

So please join the Yale Club of Houston and send in your dues payment today. There are several options for membership. The All Events Membership is the best deal, including the cost of membership and admission to all events. Save at least $100 on the cost of attending events by paying for them in advance. You can even buy a second All Events Membership for a spouse or frequent guest. Young Alumni discount pricing is available for both All Events and Regular Membership.

Please also consider sending in a Patron Donation with your membership dues. Since the Yale Club of Houston is a 501c3 organization, your contribution is tax deductible. Patron donations support many worthwhile programs including Bulldogs on the Bayou and provision of the Yale Book Awards.

This year’s theme comes from our service project. Let’s “whistle while we work.” No matter what we do, with the right attitude, with the can do spirit, we will have a good year. We invite you to let us know it you would like to be more actively involved with your club. As I have alluded, there is much to do.

I hope to see you at the some of the upcoming events this year!

Boola,

Risher Randall, Jr.

President, Yale Club of Houston

Yale Day of Service

Thirty-seven volunteers, all of whom somehow connected to Yale University, manned the Beacon on Saturday May 16, 2009. Located in downtown Houston, the Beacon provides basic services such as a noontime meal, showers, and laundry for Houston’s homeless population.

Registering the near 500 homeless as they arrived at the opening shift were Jenny and Jessica Allen, Lily Berniker, and Bill Hixon. The girls are students at St. John’s High School as well as children of Yale graduates. Serving in the kitchen were Chinhui Juhn, Eddie Allen, an interloper from Princeton and husband of Chinhui and father of Jessica and Jenny, and Eric Berniker, father of Lily. They chopped and diced an infinite supply of fruits and vegetables. The coffee accoutrements cart was ably handled by Jane Curtis and her fifth grade daughter Hannah. While Chinhui wore her Yale Day of Service t-shirt and others donned Yale attire, my favorite was Hannah’s simple Yale shirt leaving no doubt of her affiliation.

Chip Cowell, his girlfriend Ronnye Patterson, Travis Torrence, and Robin Preussel served in the laundry room. Arriving and staying late were Austen Furse and his fifth grade daughter Katherine and her friend Tessa Twiford.

The second shift commenced at 11:00 and an energetic group of twelve relieved our hard working early arrivers. Fairfax and Risher Randall and Leslie Goldman took over at the registration desk. Joe Sassin and his daughter Alexa, a recently admitted high school senior, served in the kitchen along with Sylvia and John Freeman, Linda Weiner, Carolyn Swann, and John Gealy. William Booher took over at the coffee accoutrement cart. Omar Rouchon was our sole representative in the laundry. At this time of day, the Beacon is bustling with activity as lunch is being served.

Clean up began in earnest with the third shift. Nena and David Karohl, Kevin Lewis, Blake Barnett, and the Kantor-Stone family served on this final shift. All was done by 4:00 p.m. While by the Beacon’s standards, the crowd was smaller than usual, all our volunteers were put to work doing useful assignments. Several took the business card of Mike Puccio, the Beacon’s Executive Director, and were considering a return visit with their church, synagogue, employer, or just individually.

The celebratory reception was not well attended but we did see Marlon Castillo, captain of our Habitat for Humanity project, which had taken place at the same time as our project at the Beacon. He reported that some fifteen volunteers helped construct a home for a needy family in Pearland (south of downtown Houston). All together, fifty-two volunteers from the Yale community in Houston spent a day giving back a little of its time to help others and paradoxically gained much more. The “can do” spirit is alive and we thank the AYA for fanning the flame.

You're invited to view my online photos at the Gallery.
Enjoy! - Risher

Spring String Soiree

On Friday, March 27, a group of Yale alumni and friends gathered at the home of Joe and Barbra Munisteri for an evening of champagne, dessert and chamber music. The musical masters of the evening were the Boolean Quartet who charmed the audience with such well-known favorites as Mozart’s “The Hunt” and Dvorak’s “American” string quartets. The quartet also had the audience in stitches when they played spoofs of Strauss waltzes by Paul Hindesmith, a Yale Music Professor who had actually taught our very own Joe Munisteri! The perfect note was completed with Italian Cream Cake from Epicure, and more wine all around. The highlight of the evening was the showing of Joe’s special violin collection, including a vintage 1703 violin from Venice made by Francesco Gobetti, an apprentice of the famed Antonio Stradvari. The sounds of the beautiful instruments lingered as the audience reluctantly headed home.
